Annie Leibovitz, Vanity Fair & Bruce Jenner

bruce-april27Furthering our opining about covers…it seems none other than Annie Leibovitz, photographer of the stars and a star herself, has been slated to snap Bruce Jenner transformed for the cover of Vanity Fair. As we have all recently seen the ex Olympiad, Kardashian step-dad still as a man (even with the longer hair, fingers nails and post specific surgeries) this ‘coming-out’ of Jenner will most likely prove the high fashion/celebrity reveal of the year.

When you have shot such iconic covers like a pregnant Demi Moore, or a Whoopi Goldberg in a milk bath you do get the plum assignments to be sure.

What exact summer issue this sure-to-be-controversial cover will be for, is not yet certain. What exactly will one see of ‘Her’ as Bruce Jenner called his female self in his Diana Sawyer interview, no one knows. Will there be an extensive interview with Jenner as well the couture culture magazine, this has all yet to be declared by V.F. What is known though is that the timely Leibovitz shoot and whatever Vanity Fair runs coincides perfectly with Jenner’s new reality ‘docu-series.’

This 8-episode show will supposedly be focused on Jenner’s cosmetic concerns through his transformations, as it will his social life and his golf game, something he/she is and will be continuing to be serious about. How this all measures up in the modern exploit-reality-voyeurism cable T.V. culture, or if Jenner’s show, being about the subject it is, will make a dent in helping the mainstream understand the transgendered (as Jenner has said it hopes it does,) will no doubt be bandied about by all who even give the show a passing viewing.

For now what is assured is that Leibovitz and Vanity Fair will make quite a splash on what might just be the most talked about cover on a high fashion (or any) magazine this year.

Covered: JLo, Tess Holliday and our own Sabina Kelley

VG9-mag CVR1[2]Surely we are familiar with magazine covers of beautiful models (just see Sabina Kelley on our new Von Gutenberg issue #9.) These days women-and men-make the cover of a magazine for a multitude of reasons; for their beauty, their celebrity, for some present controversy they might be mining for the obligatory 15 minutes of fame. And sometimes what’s on the cover of a magazine, whether that magazine is a high couture fashion magazine or a weekly light entertainment publication, gets more press and is often even more interesting then what’s between the magazine’s pages for that issue.

Of course, this isn’t the case with V.G. #9!

Here’s two examples of covers that caught not just the eye but the blog ‘o scribble of many (this blogger included) this week.

In what seems a trend of late, another ‘larger’ size lady has made news posing for a magazine. This week we see Tess Holliday, a size 22 model, landing her first cover; she will appear on the front of the June 1st issue of People. Boasting 707, 000 Instagram followers, signed with MILK, already having worked for Torrid and Benefit, this plus-size model is certainly a popula…of a decidedly bigger size then is usually seen.

Continuing to stun (though God knows it’s not unusual with someone with this kind of world-wide visibility to keep themselves in shape) Jennifer Lopez is shocking the world once again, this time on the cover of the ‘best body issue’ of Us Weekly. Much is being made of the swimsuit JLo’s wears on this cover, showing as it does “reverse cleavage” coming as it does right after Lopez showed off copious “underboob” in her Charbel Zoe gown at the 2015 Billboard Music Awards last week.jlo-us-weekly-thatgrapejuice-600x814

Will we see more plus size women on the covers of magazine? We will be lucky enough to possibly catch “side boob” next time from JLo…have you ever seen a better background then the Las Vegas desert on our Sabina Kelley cover? Who can say. But somebody out there has probably got you covered.

London Fashion Designer Sasha Louise’s Latex Kickstarter Campaign

bnSo here’s a question pitting our modern age with latex fashion: Would a Kickstarter campaign work for a fashion designer looking to fund latex couture? U.K. designer Sasha Louise, a London College of Fashion graduate and all-around top-notch designer, is currently trying to acquire funding via a Kickstarter campaign. Riding that balance beam between haute couture and fetish, Sasha is one of those designers who has her hands-on all aspects of her business-from pattern cutting, to product packaging, to marketing, etc.-and has created her own “latex net” material. She has worked with Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus and Nicole Scherzinger, as well as garnered interest in media from Rabid, SID, Notion and Fabulous magazines. Presently Sasha is shooting her first-ever “lookbook” intending to showcase it at London Fashion Week showrooms for both Men’s and Women’s fashion week. Sasha’s Kickstarter campaign has been put into place to make this all happen and to push her latex clothing to the next level.

As she says about this modern-day way of acquiring funds: “I’ve known of kickstarter for a while and have seen some really cool ideas come to life from it, so when I looked at where my company is and where I want to be I knew I needed funding and thought this would be a really interactive way of getting it.”

Sasha says she has only encountered positivity about her latex clothing, from all sorts of people (something we are thrilled to hear). Designing with the material we all know and love simply progressed from her personal ‘alternative’ interests.

“When I saw latex on the body I was in love…but when I touched it I was really in love,” she admits. “It’s such an amazing fabric and I just wanted to push the boundaries with it and see what I could do.”

Of course the downside of attempting to raise funds through Kickstarter is that one has to consider not reaching their goal. Sasha says if she doesn’t she will have to reduce her collection and not be able to continue with her Fashion week plans or distribute the lookbook, but she adds with a positivity that makes all the very best designers: “If it doesn’t happen right now then it will just take a little longer.”

Of course we hope Sasha reaches her goal (and beyond it for all her dreams.) Look for her kickstarter campaign here.

Golf Digest and Lexi Thompson Feel Some Heat

masl23-lexi-coverAnd here we all thought the world of fashion only ever sees such modeling controversies: Golf Digest has just revealed a topless Lexi Thompson on its May issue cover that is seeing lots of heat.

Twenty year old Thompson is fronting the “Fitness and Power” issue of GD, holding a towel perfectly placed round her neck and draped down her front, while wearing a blue golf glove and black yoga pants. To say she looks every bit the stunning confident athlete would be an understatement. But many are voicing negative opinion over a woman displayed this way on this magazine.

Golf Digests’ editor-in-chief Jerry Tarde responded to the vociferous backlash:

“We’ve come a long way from a year ago when the LPGA condemned our choice of Paulina Gretzky (and Holly Sonders in 2013) as the cover images for Golf Digest’s annual fitness issue. Mea culpa, ladies. You can have stunning beauty and the highest level of golf performance at the same time, as demonstrated this year by Lexi, Stacy Lewis, Cheyenne Woods and Michelle Wie.”

Tarde also made it a point to remind his critics that Golf Digest featured Rory McIlroy in nothing but a kilt, but the prevailing opposing opinion about this is that the woman who appear on the magazine-the afore mention Gretzky, Sonders and Wie-have shown quite a bit more skin than their male contemporaries.268A215F00000578-2989838-image-a-16_1426084808569

Often with the latex fashion models we employ we’ve come face-to-face with the conundrum of what to show and when in our pages and on our site. Given that a number of fantasy wardrobes not only reveal copious amounts of bump, curve and dent of both our fetching male and female models, and many an ‘adult’ clothing accessory is created with the expressed implication to reveal more than a smidgen of skin, we work hard at Von Gutenberg to keep as much to the imagination as we can in our high-end couture reportage and photo essays. It’s is a high wire act indeed knowing what to conceal with what to reveal as we attempt to show out best, brightest and often sexiest.

We march ever onward doing what we feel best for us as Golf Digest seems to be doing for their magazine. As for the lady in question here, Thompson tweeted pictures of her cover under a #GirlPower hashtag.

Fun Sexy Couture Stories

Sometimes there is just too much good stuff going on in the world of lifestyle, couture and sexiness not to fill-up one big blog with a few stories.

A Lingerie Jail Break

safe_imageThey say clothes make the man…but sometimes they fuel a prison break as well. In a Brazilian jail last week three women dressed in the outfits you see here (not exactly latex but certainly close to some of the couture we sell here) entered the lock-down promising the guards of Nova Mutum prison an orgy. The women seduced the guards to take them down to the guards’ sleeping barracks, where the ladies then slipped their companions spiked whiskey that soon left the guards unconscious and very soon relieved of their clothes, keys to cells and handcuffed. The women then proceeded to free 28 inmates.

Miley Cyrus On…Then Off

Hanna Montana has certainly grown-up in everyone’s estimation to the tongue totting Miley Cyrus of video, stage and twerking. One of the videos she used on her Bangerz Tour, titled “Tongue Tied,” was entered in the NYC Porn Festival happening at the end of February. Well at least it was submitted as the beginning of the week. It now seems Miley’s people have retracted the submission which shows Miley in fishnets, tied to a chair with a strip of black tape across her breasts.

It doesn’t seem that Cyrus is balking at being shown so bare, in a decidedly bondage-influenced ‘wardrobe,’ but according to the film festival’s organizer, the word ‘porn’ being used in the title of the event is what gave the Cyrus camp cold feet.miley-cyrus-enters-nyc-porn-festival-with-a-short-film-0

The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition cover controversey

Not that bikini-clad models walking beaches and languidly showing their curves in an infamous yearly issue of a famous sport’s magazine doesn’t garner enough attention and derision each and every year. This year’s 2015’s Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue has got lots of people weighing in over its cover alone! It seems 24 year old model Hannah Davis is just showing too much of herself for public decency.

Hannah is being criticized for pulling her bikini bottom just too low down her front (you judge for yourself, see the picture to the right). One should note though, that it’s this issue that features the first-ever plus-sized model (Ashley Graham) in a S.I. issue. hannah-davis-swimsuit-cover-reveal-2015

S.A.G. Awards Stylings

aniston sag awardsAs we’ve said more times than we care to count, what’s an award show without the big “Who Are You Wearing” reveal in the red carpet? This time of year we get the Grammy’s, the Golden Globes and the big daddy Oscar telecast. But with the S.A.G. awards just past (and clocking-in at a respectable mere few hours) we can certainly assume dearly departed Joan Rivers’ territory like on who wore what and the effect of it all.

Birdman nominee Emma Stone slicked her hair down in a side pony and sported shocking ruby red lips, while Best Actress nominee Reese Witherspoon sported her own side pony, though wearing a white gown to Emma’s dark one.  Much is being made about another Best Actress nominee “taking the plunge” as Jennifer Aniston revealed quite a bit of her front in a plunging John Galliano gown. Jared Leto and Mathew McConaughey both sported a great bit of facial hair (and Leto his usual long locks) while the startling transformation of a beardless and quite a few pound-less Zak Galifianakis made the Twitter feed sparkle with a “Who Is that?”

Claire Danes was in a crisscross fronted grown of emerald, Felicity Jones’s in white like Witherspoon (in a Balenciaga gown) and Lupita Nyong’o’s piled high braid made her even more stunning than usual.

There seems to be no end to Hollywood’s self-congratulatory events, but they do bring the best and brightest to our T.V. screens so we can bandy about opinion on fashion and make-up choices. In the end none of this matters to most people’s everyday existences but it is fun to see who is wearing what and read opinions from far and wide.zach gal

And don’t kid yourself, though Emma Stone, Jared Leto and the rest will most likely never hear the opinions of you or me, they are in the business to care about what they look like on and off screen.

Art Imitating Life Imitating Fight Club With Shangguan Zhe & Sankuanz

0a6720452efa82602067cf1657a8be347fe9cdccChinese designer Shangguan Zhe of Sankuanz enlisted makeup artist Maria Comparetto to paint black eyes, bruises, and busted-up lips to his models for a Fight Club-inspired look. Helping to contrast the almost cartoon-like Sankuanz collection, designer and team were hoping to bring a smidgen of “boys being boys” “roughhousing” “theater” (all terms Zhe used to describe what she was after) to the showing.

As in the Fight Club movie, where members were not allowed to talk about Fight Club, nobody was much talking about the fake bruises and cuts here either. In the end actually only one major fashion mag even covered the show these models walked at. Still, what has most fashionistas and opinion makers opining is that, had these been female models all faux busted-up, the resultant story would have been quite different. In the climate of a rampant amp-up by the media (in the U.S. alone) over violence against women, this is no time for even a slight hint of such subjects, unless one is taking a decidedly serious view. We all know what a trip-up in the politically correct spectrum of life can saddle one with.

“Even if I were asked, I would not have put bruises on a female model,” Zhe said.

One does wonder, when viewing runaway shows as much as pondering the trailers for the upcoming Fifty Shades Of Grey (a story with its own brand of exploitation of women and a studied amount of violent actions) as well in light of the recent AMSR rulings on pornography in the UK, where does fantasy end and reality begin? Or is it all one-and-the-same, that what we dream about if made reality can trip the high wire of what polite society deems worthy of talking or legislating against?

Shangguan Zhe’s statement safe, sane or dangerous?

The ‘New’ E! Fashion Police

fashion-police-promo-brad-goreski-kathy-griffinWith the death of Joan Rivers last year it was ripe fodder for blog guessing and fashion opining just who would-if anyone-take over as the host of E!’s Fashion Police show. Rumors abounded, and then nuggets of the changes came through, to be confirmed just recently. Comedian/Joan Rivers super fan and quite the snarky fashion commentator herself Kathy Griffin will indeed join the show as the new host (which begins post Golden Globes on 1/12 at 9pm EST on E!). Old’ F.P. regulars, Kelly Osbourne and Giuliana Rancic, plus newcomer Brad Goreski, will join her to dish the dirt on celebrity couture. Joan River’s daughter Melissa will produce.

In a tip-of-her-hat to the New Year, her new job and her dearly departed friend, Griffin actually wore a black Dennis Basso fur coat when she appeared with Anderson Cooper New Years Eve; the coat was Rivers’. Griffin also managed to dye Cooper’s hair red and blue on live T.V., once again proving her unpredictability…a brazenness E! is surely counting on to cull viewers to the new F.P.

There seems to be no limit to the mayhem Griffin might lead the Fashion Police to, as Griffin herself warned celebrities in a promo clip for the show. She states “Anything you wear an and will be held against you,” and Kelly Osbourne adds her own: “You have the right to remain stylish” quip.

(In other ‘reboot/return’ T.V. show news, Osbourne and her infamous, wacky family-rocker dad Ozzy in tow, now clean-will be returning for a short run of The Osbournes, the show that made Kelly and her family household names.)

As we seem to be inundated with ever more Hollywood award shows-self congratulatory and/or well meaning-and infatuated with celebrity couture as the public is, the Fashion Police will most likely fare well with its new host and additions well into 2015 and beyond.

The Continuing Saga Of John Galliano

john-galliano-makes-a-rare-appearance-to-present-anna-wintour-with-award-at-the-bfas-1417519751The continuing saga of John Galliano has been one of the more interesting stories in the fashion world of late. The designer who has always sparked interest-to say the least-and supposedly has seen the error of whatever ways the general public and his fellows thought he should see the error of, will present his return couture collection for Maison Martin Margiela in London on January 12th. Galliano’s fashion return will occur during the London Collections: Men show, in the city the Gilbraltar-born designer spent “formative years and his beginnings in the industry” in, a Margiela press release stated.

Galliano actually made his public ‘re-entry’ in his adopted UK city early this month presenting an Outstanding Achievement award at the British Fashion Awards.

For those who do not know or don’t care to recall, Galliano was fired from Dior in Feb. 2011 for a “I love Hitler” tirade he gave (actually two different, equally hate-speech rants were noted in the Galliano saga) while drunk at a Parisian café. Yes, it is certainly not so nice spewing the opinion Galliano did, but in the city of lights anti-semitic speech is actually illegal! Galliano was found guilty and made to pay a fine.Since that time he has admitted to therapy, made strategic appearances on T.V shows and has altered his look.

Whatever the effect of the man’s three-year crawl back to fashion icon status will have on John Galliano, if his new collection for Maison Martin Margiela will be accepted and applauded, and if indeed it was unfair to even prosecute the man for his remarks (as his defense lawyers tried to argue it was and sued for appeal and damages) it will all come down to how much his couture is accepted.

The Galliano collection will also be shown in Paris –of all places-during that city’s Couture Fashion Week, at the end of the same month.

The Von Gutenberg Couture is ‘showing’ now, here.
